The film THE LEGACY is a multimedia event that includes film and live music, and is part of a practice-based PhD at the Huston School of Film and Digital Media, NUIGalway. It is based on the research findings of the thesis: ‘The Legacy/Das Vermächtnis: the role of cultural production in the reprocessing of collective experiences that are equivalent to trauma’.  While the interdisciplinary research shows the connection between trauma, social disconnection and violence, the film aims to highlight this connection within the context of German history to acknowledge the unprocessed crisis of German history and to show how collective violence developed out of a loss of social connection.  The film wants to honour the victims of the Holocaust and to reestablish the loss of social and emotional link to the groups that were excluded from society during the Nazi regime. The film uses quotes by the sociologist Maurice Halbwachs as sign posts into a collective past, archive material as well as documentary footage and vocal and instrumental music that is in part meant to be performed live to the screening of the film.

Der Film DAS VERMÄCHTNIS ist eine multimediale Filmveranstaltung, die Teil einer praxisbezogenen Doktorarbeit ist und bezieht sich auf die Dissertation mit dem Titel:  ‘The Legacy/Das Vermächtnis: die Rolle kultureller Produktionen in der Verarbeitung von kollektiven Erlebnissen die mit Trauma vergleichbar sind.’ Während die interdisziplinäre Studie den Zusammenhang zwischen Trauma, Bezugsverlust und Gewalt aufzeigt, versucht der Film diesen Zusammenhang innerhalb der deutschen Vergangenheit bewußt zu machen, auf die unverarbeiteten Krisen der deutschen Geschichte hinzuweisen und aufzuzeigen, wie sich kollektive Gewalt aus sozialem Bezugsverlust entwickelt hat. In diesem Zusammenhang wird versucht den verlorengegangenen Bezug zu den Randgruppen, die nach 1933 der kollektiven Gewalt zum Opfer fielen, wieder herzustellen.  Der Film benutzt Zitate des Soziologen Maurice Halbwachs zum Thema ‘Kollektives Gedächtnis’ als Wegweiser in die gesellschaftliche Vergangenheit, Archivfilmmaterial und Dokumentaraufnahmen, sowie vokale und instrumentale Musik, die teilweise live zur Filmprojektion gezeigt werden soll.
